Why we build

Building Opportunity — One Lot at a Time

Tacoma DADU was founded on the idea that DADUs are more than just a construction project — they're an opportunity. An opportunity for homeowners to generate income, create space for the people they love, and add real long-term value to their property. And on a bigger scale, an opportunity for communities like Tacoma to grow in a way that works for everyone — adding quality housing without changing the character of the neighborhoods people love.

We started in Tacoma with that mission and we're bringing it to the Treasure Valley.

Who We Are

Four decades of construction experience, built on a foundation of family and craftsmanship.

Meet Matt & Mark Rody - Tacoma DADU

Tacoma-born, family-built, and proud to serve the South Sound

Matt & Mark Rody grew up in Tacoma, Washington learning the construction trade alongside their father. That early foundation — built on hard work, honest craftsmanship, and doing things the right way — shaped how Mark runs the builds, and how Matt runs the business.

After decades of construction experience across the Pacific Northwest, Matt saw an opportunity that most builders were overlooking. Homeowners across the region were sitting on underutilized lots with real potential — for rental income, for family housing, for long-term equity — but the process of building an accessory dwelling unit was complicated, fragmented, and full of contractors who didn't specialize in the work. Matt set out to change that.

Tacoma DADU was built to be different. One experienced family team. One contract. A process designed around making something complicated feel manageable. Matt & Mark bring their family-driven work ethic to every project and have built a reputation in the Tacoma and Pierce County market on straight talk, real numbers, and showing up the way they said they would.

With 80+ DADUs completed, these brothers have seen every scenario the permitting process, utility coordination, and construction phase can throw at a project. That experience is what defines Tacoma DADU — along with the same hands-on, honest approach that has been there from the beginning.

When you work with Tacoma DADU, you're working with a family team. And for this family, every project is personal.

Tacoma DADU & ADU FAQs

Answers to the most common questions homeowners ask about the process of adding a DADU unit to their property.

What is a DADU and how is it different from an ADU?

A DADU — detached accessory dwelling unit — is a fully independent structure built on your existing lot, separate from your main home. An ADU can be attached or interior. Both are legal, permitted living spaces — the difference is whether they're connected to the primary structure or freestanding.

Can I build a DADU on my lot in Tacoma?

Most single-family lots in Tacoma zoned R-1 or R-2 allow DADUs. Setback requirements, lot size minimums, and allowable square footage vary by zone. We do a free lot assessment to give you a definitive answer before any money changes hands.

How much does a DADU cost in Tacoma?

Costs vary based on model size, lot conditions, utility connections, and finish level. Our completed projects range from our compact McKinley model through to fully finished 1,000 sq ft builds. Contact us for a real number based on your specific lot and goals.

How long does it take to build a DADU in Tacoma?

From consultation to certificate of occupancy, most Tacoma projects run 10–14 months. Permit timelines at the City of Tacoma and TPU utility approval are the biggest variables — we'll give you a realistic timeline based on current conditions when we assess your lot.

What are the setback requirements for a DADU in Tacoma?

Tacoma updated its DADU setback rules in February 2025, reducing the rear setback requirement to 10 feet. Side setbacks vary by zone. We verify your specific parcel before design begins to make sure we're maximizing your buildable area.

Does Tacoma DADU handle permits?

Yes — permitting is included in our full-service process. We handle the entire City of Tacoma permit application, TPU coordination, and all required inspections through to certificate of occupancy.
